Power Sharing Class 10 notes

Power Sharing Class 10 notes

In class 9th we have already studied that in a democracy all the power of the government does not rest in a single organ of the government.

All the important works of the government like law making, implementing the law, and providing justice are allocated to different organs of the government- Legislative, Executive and Judiciary respectively. The Following chart will illustrate the allocation of the works of government more clearly.

From the above chart it is clear that the different works of the government are distributed among different organs of the government.  This distribution of works, among different organs of the government is a form of ‘power sharing’. There are many other ways of power sharing, which we will discuss at the later stages of this lesson.

Now the most important question is why  do we need this type of power sharing arrangements?

Now let us try to understand the need of power sharing with the example of Sri Lanka and Belgium.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is located in the Indian ocean just a few kilometres away from the coast of Tamil Nadu. The Ethnic composition of Sri Lanka is as follows:

Sinhla Speakers: 74%

Tamil Speakers : 18%

Tamil speakers have two sub-groups:1. Srilankan Tamils and 2. Indian Tamils

1. Srilankan Tamils:- They are native of Srilanka whose population is 13% resst 5% are Indian Tamils

2. Indian Tamils: Indian Tamils are those Tamils whose forefather came from India as plantation workers during colonial period.

Now let us see how these ethnic groups of Sinhala and Tamils  led to a civil war in Sri Lanka. Most of the Sinhala speakers are Buddhists and and mosth of the Tamil speakers are either Hindus or Muslims.
